Softbox Question while using in the studio...?
When using a soft box how close do you put it by the subject. Lets say the softbox is the main light ... set at f8 and I got 80% of light blowing pass infront of the subject... I work with a guy that puts it really really close to his clinet and I see other videos where it's 3 feet away from the subject... is this just "to each his own" or is there a correct way. How do you do it?
For 'normal' portraiture, you are looking for soft light. That's why you're putting a large softbox on your lights. The closer you get to your subject, the softer the light will be. Many photographers will place the light as close as possible to the subject without it getting in the field of view of the camera. The fill light is 'normally' put just behind the camera. I put normal in quotes because it is not a rule. It's a good starting point to get quality portraits while you learn to experiment with different lighting positions.
