Sharpen Your Photography Skills With These 5 Photos Projects
It's not uncommon to find ourselves occasionally stuck in a rut. These ruts aren’t limited to our day-to-day lives and can often crop up in our hobbies. Even the most passionate photographers find themselves in a loop now and again, and when these situations arise it is important we rise to the challenge and force ourselves out of our comfort zones with interesting projects. Here are five ways you can challenge yourself and test your photographic skills.
Self-Portraits
Often times photographers spend so much time behind the camera that they forget about taking pictures of themselves. Self-portraiture is a difficult branch of photography that comes with several challenges. When you're not able to look through the lens, everything becomes more complicated like focusing, framing the image and even making yourself look good. If you want to liven up your pictures try adding a few props to your self portrait and see how it turns out.
Take a Step Back in Time
Although you may shoot like a pro with your new digital SLR, but have you thought about trying an old twin reflex or film camera? If you've run out of fresh ideas, there is nothing better than getting some old equipment and figuring out how to use it. As an added bonus, you will learn to understand many elements of photography that may have been automatically taken care of with your newer gear, and your photos will only improve as your knowledge of the medium increases. Get rid of your light meter and break out your notepad!
Try Superimposing Your Images
If you've never tried superimposing your images then you really need to give it a try. If you're not familiar with superimposing, it's the art of taking two pictures and superimposing them over each other. This can lead to spectacular and surreal images (Google “Scott Mutters” for examples) that defy logic. Digital editing software has certainly made this easier than it used to be as you can now take two good shots and work them together later on instead of waiting to get it right. Then, you can frame your new images in matted picture frames or try using no mats in a couple of 11x14 picture frames.
Time Lapse
Time-lapse photography refers to taking hundreds of pictures of the same subject over long periods of time. Although this type of project does require a big commitment it can be very satisfying when it's all completed. Good subjects include buildings, children or outdoor settings that have noticeable weather changes. If you've ever seen a slide show of someone who photographed themselves every day for several years, it's a great example of time lapse photography.
Tell a Story with Your Pictures
If you find yourself walking the thin line between photographer and writer, this may be the best project for you. The goal here is to create a narrative, either on paper or in your mind, about a character that lives in your area. You should think of how they spend their day and then take a lot of pictures of how you think they would spend their day. At the end of the day, you can put all of your photographs in order and add descriptions to each one explaining what your character would have been doing in those locations.
Photography is an art, and like any other are it requires inspiration if you want to keep it fresh. Finding new and exciting ways in which to shoot will not only keep your hobby entertaining, but will help you to develop a wider set of skills. The next time you find yourself stuck in a rut, try doing one of these projects and watch yourself suddenly coming up with all new kinds of photo ideas.
do you think this is a good trade?
I just don't know what to do. I need a larger vehicle for a couple reasons.
1. I started a business and need extra room for props (photography)
2. Winters in MN suck, and my Saturn really blows in the snow and ice.
So I have a 2002 Saturn, good condition, good gas mileage, 132xxx miles that I am willing to trade in for a 1998 Durango. Its in awesome shape, 170xxx miles, and has enough space and will do great in the snow and ice...
Do you think this is a good trade?
The bad:
The Durango is older than my saturn and it gets less miles to the gallon...although I dont do TONS of driving except during shoots out of town.
Your car definitely sounds better than the Durango, if you personally think you really
need a larger car then by all means its a good trade. otherwise, its balanced a little
bit in the Durango's owners favour.

and medications can bring immediate relief, but may not be enough to remove
