California Police Cruisers: When did they change from red to multi color light bars?
In the 60s and 70s, police cruisers had a single red "cherry" light on top of the cruisers. Today they have a light bar of red, blue and white. I just can't remember exactly when they changed. Anyone know?
Actually if you look close in Ca all of the police cars still have at least one steady red light.
Ca has had a law on the books forever that a police car was only official if it had a steady red light.
As more and more makers of equipment were able to become more flexible in their designs due to strobe, LED and the controls necessary to use where computerized Ca departments went to the more complicated lights.
So it was about the same time that most other places that had multiple rotating beacons went to the flatter light bar, in the very late 70's and early 80's.
