Illumination And Aiming For The AR-15
Compact illumination solutions can be added to almost any long arm. LED lights can offer both illumination, short range aiming and the ability to blind an opponent at close range. LEDs have pushed reliability, output and battery life upward and some lamps now feature powerful aiming lasers to offer a multipurpose aiming and illumination solution.
The Surefire X300 is a very small and powerful 170 lumen light will not burn out or break like legacy incandescent lights. Even with batteries, the light weighs only as much as an Aimpoint T-1 red dot sight. It comes with the attachments for either universal, Weaver or Picatinny rails. The light comes with a momentary and full on-off switch at the rear that can be operated with one finger. You can purchase grip or remote mounted switches for additional versatility. The light is 22 meter waterproof thanks to O-ring sealing and constructed of rugged 6000 series aluminum, Type III hard anodized in a matte black finish.
The Surefire X400 adds a very powerful 5 milliwatt, 635 nanometer aiming laser that is almost twice as bright as that of its most powerful competitor. A mode selector gives light only, laser only or combined light and laser modes. It is possible to deactivate the unit to prevent inadvertent activation. Again the unit can mount on the most popular rails. The problem of adjusters working loose is solved by nylok screws. The unit rarely needs re-zeroing.
The Surefire M952V is an LED gun light that provides both white light and IR illumination by twisting and pressing the lens housing. In day mode the LED gives 1.8 hours of 150 lumen illumination, going up to 8 hours in IR mode at 120 mW. This unit comes with momentary/full on off switch at the rear of housing and a 7" cable mounted momentary on/off switch for remote operation. A rugged throw-lever mount allows quick detach and reattachment of the unit to the rifle.
